    • Ask students what kinds of actions in football can result in a booking ( yellow card, a red card).
    • Listen to the podcast and listen for the numbers: What was the score before Man United made a comeback? What was the final score? When did Cunha score his two goals? What does 90 represent?
    • Do a cause and effect activity: list causes in one column and student listen and write the effects in the other column: cause/effect pairs: Excitement and adrenaline after scoring twice (“a rush of blood”) / Cunha made a rash challenge on Balerdi; Rash challenge on Balerdi / Second yellow card; Second yellow card / Dismissal – a red card.

Hello listener. My name is Damon and this is our weekly football phrase podcast. How are you doing? Have you been watching much football? Unfortunately for me as a Liverpool fan, my team have just lost two games on the bounce, one in the league to Arsenal and the other in the Champions League to Fenerbahçe. I hope we can bounce back at the weekend.

Today’s phrase comes from the Champions League mid-week action, and the match between Manchester United and Roma. We did a podcast a few weeks ago about under pressure Michael Carrick, the manager of Manchester United. And his team as well as Carrick were under pressure going in to this fixture. In the end, The Red Devils ran out 3-2 winners after an exciting comeback from 2-0 down.

The phrase from this match I will focus on today is ‘a rush of blood‘, and it is connected with United’s hero of the night, Matheus Cunha.

(a) Rush of Blood

DB: A rush of blood, or a rush of blood to the head, is a moment when a player stops thinking clearly and acts impulsively because of emotions like frustration, anger, excitement, or panic. It suggests poor judgment and a loss of self-control.

In the Champions League match between Manchester United and Roma, Cunha was the English team’s hero as he scored twice to secure an important win from behind for his team. He scored two great goals, one in the 83rd minute and the second three minutes later in the 86th minute.

The Brazilian stripped off his shirt and dived into the crowd to celebrate his goal and his team looking likely to win the match. Of course he received a yellow card for taking his shirt off and the celebration. But, soon after this, he had a rush of blood.

Here is how the Guardian described the moment: ‘he ended up being sent off for a second yellow card in the 90th minute. His lunge at Leonardo Balerdi was the definition of a rush of blood.’

So, in the 90th minute, just before the end of the game, he made a silly tackle, a lunge on Balerdi, and received a second yellow and his marching orders – a red card.

His emotions and adrenaline must have stopped him thinking properly and he went for a tackle he could never win and which was likely to be seen as a foul. He had a rush of blood to the head.

(a) Rash Challenge

DB: Another phrase you’ll sometimes hear along with a rush of blood is ‘a rash challenge‘.

Rash means acting too quickly and without thinking enough, so a rash challenge is a tackle that is reckless, ill-judged, or unnecessarily aggressive. For example, a player may dive into a tackle when they cannot win the ball or tackle a player from behind using a lot of force. The focus is more on the tackle itself, while a rush of blood focuses mainly on the player’s emotions, explaining the reason for the tackle.

We could combine both of these phrases into the cause – a rush of blood – to the action – a rash tackle: Cunha’s rash challenge on Balerdi in the dying seconds was a rush of blood that earned him a second yellow card and a dismissal.

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites. In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website. The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
