Hello

DF: Hello again everyone. My name is Damian and I am based in London and this is the weekly football phrase from the Learn English through football team when we explain a phrase or a football term from the previous weekend’s games. And this week I am going to look at the phrase, ‘score a double‘ after Real Madrid’s win in el clásico last weekend.

Score a double

DF: Right, so Real Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 away in el clásico last weekend to cut the gap at the top of the table to just three points. The Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé scored twice; he scored two goals to win the game. Sometimes when a player scores two goals in a game we can say that they have scored a or they have bagged a brace. And we have done a few posts on this term including one from the 2026 World Cup when Bologun scored twice for the US team against Paraguay. There is another phrase to describe when a player scores two goals and this is, ‘to score a double‘. So Kylian Mbappé scored a double against Barcelona last weekend.

Now, in some newspaper reports and headlines we might see the phrase Kylian Mbappé’s double – which refers to the fact that the French striker scored twice. Here are some examples from a couple of media outlets:

Examples:

  1. Mbappe’s double in Real’s 2-1 win ended Barcelona’s nine-game unbeaten domestic run with a crucial Clasico victory at the Camp Nou (BBC.co.uk)
  2. Mbappé double secures Real Madrid late victory at Barcelona after Raphinha leveller (Guardian.co.uk)

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
