Learn the Present Continuous in Portuguese and Practice More!

Hey guys! Today, we are going to talk about the present continuous in Portuguese. Do you know how to use this tense? It’s not that hard, we promise!

This structure is your best friend when you want to say what you’re doing right now, exactly like in English.

And yes — this is a very Brazilian structure! In Portugal, they use a different system (don’t worry, we’ll explain that too).

Let’s go! 🤙🌞

🇧🇷 What Is the Present Continuous in Portuguese?

It’s a verb tense that expresses an action happening at this very moment.

Examples:

Portuguese English
Eu estou estudando português. I am studying Portuguese.
Ela está dançando funk. She is dancing funk.
Nós estamos bebendo água de coco. We are drinking coconut water.

Simple, right?

Structure of the Present Continuous in Portuguese

Structure of the present continuous: presente do verbo estar + verbo principal + -ndo. Example with the present continuous tense in Portuguese: Onde você está morando? Eu estou morando em Copacabana.

Before we learn the structure, we need to look at something super important:

To form the Present Continuous in Portuguese, we always start with the present tense of the verb estar. This verb works like the “helper” of the sentence, just like to be in English. So let’s remember its forms:

Person Estar (Present Tense)
Eu estou
Você / Ele / Ela está
Nós estamos
Vocês / Eles / Elas estão

Without estar in the present, you can’t build the Present Continuous!

👉 The structure is:

  1. Conjugate estar in the present (estou, está, estamos…)
  2. Take the main verb in the infinitive (falar, comer, partir…)
  3. Replace the ending with -ndo
    • AR → -ando (falar → falando)
    • ER → -endo (comer → comendo)
    • IR → -indo (partir → partindo)

✔ Example from the image:

Onde você está morando?
Where are you living?

Answer:
Eu estou morando em Copacabana.
I am living in Copacabana.

This is exactly the structure:

  • estou → present of estar
  • morando → gerund of morar (morar → morando)

Check out how we use this gerund for each type of ending in Portuguese tenses:

Infinitive Verb Gerund Verb
Falar Falando
Comer Comendo
Dormir Dormindo

These forms are super common! If you want more practice with the gerund itself, don’t miss our Dica Gerund in Portuguese.

Very Brazilian, very useful, very Rio! 🌊

How to Use Present Continuous in Portuguese

Here are some situations in which the present continuous tense is commonly used in Portuguese:

Current Actions: The present continuous is used to describe actions that are happening right now or around the time of speaking. Example:

Temporary Situations: It’s used to describe temporary situations or conditions that are in progress. Example:

Future Plans: In Portuguese, the present continuous can be used to describe future plans when the intention is firm and scheduled. Example:
Estou saindo com amigos amanhã.

Annoyances or Habits: It can be used to express annoyance or emphasize temporary habits. Example:

Brazil vs Portugal: What’s Different?

Portuguese people rarely use the gerund (-ndo).
Instead, they use:

“Estar a + infinitive”

Brazilian Portuguese 🇧🇷 Portugal Portuguese 🇵🇹
Estou estudando. Estou a estudar.
Ela está comendo. Ela está a comer.
Nós estamos bebendo. Nós estamos a beber.

🇧🇷 Brazil = estou + falando
🇵🇹 Portugal = estou a + falar

Both correct, just different cultures and habits!
But here at Rio & Learn, we teach Brazilian Portuguese, so stick with -ndo.
